ALL CITY Teen Poetry Slam Festival 2013
Wednesday, May 1, 2013 at 3:00 PM - Saturday, May 4, 2013 at 9:00 PM (PDT)
Baton Rouge, LA
The ALL CITY Teen Poetry Slam Festival is an annual event organized by WordPlay Teen Writing Project, a division of Forward Arts, Inc. Since its inception in 2007, the ALL CITY Teen Poetry Slam Festival has exemplified the mission of WordPlay Teen Writing Project, which is to build literary culture and community among diverse teens through poetry workshops, spoken word events, publications and educator resources. The festival is the culminating event of WordPlay’s school year which includes after school writing workshops, in – school residencies, a monthly teen poetry lounge called Freshhhh Heat, and summer programming.
ALL CITY is a four day festival where teams of youth poets ages 13-19 participate in panel discussions, writing and performance workshops, community building activities, specialty open mic readings, and preliminary bouts (poetry slam competitions). The top scoring teams of the preliminary competitions advance to the Grand Slam Finals, where the winning team is crowned WordPlay ALL CITY Champions. A poetry slam is a fun and friendly poetry competition, in which judges hold up scores after each performance. Individual and group performances are scored and counted as the teams overall score. It is a powerful way to engage youth in writing, performance and positive self-expression. It is also, like a sporting event, a great way to bring together communities in safe spaces to celebrate youth voices
